Is Now
Renewed name to represent Evolved identity
2022 marks our 15th year of working with wives and children of battle casualties. We have grown and learnt through the years and felt it was time to demonstrate an identity which is inclusive and progressive that would mirror our work.
Veer represents the soldier killed-in-action and Ratna represents his wife and children- the primary beneficiaries of the Foundation, hence, Veer Ratna Foundation.

VRF pioneers working with beneficiaries as a ‘ONE FAMILY UNIT’, enabling growth and learning for the wives and children of our jawans/soldiers killed-in-action.
We have worked with close to 200 beneficiary families across India through at least one of our engagement programs.
Veer Ratna Foundation (VRF, earlier Vasantharatna Foundation) is a public charitable trust based in Bangalore working towards empowering & transforming families of battle casualties (BC). The foundation is operational since the year 2007.
We started our work with the families of Jawans and Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO) of the Army who were killed in action in the service of the nation during war or war-like situation. We have recently expanded the scope of our programs to include Navy, Air force and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
Our work initially involved only women, referred to as veer naaris (war widows), with a shared history and identity of being a brave heart’s wife; and as an attempt to enable them to get over their common grief and create a community to help each other. As we evolved, now we engage not just with veer naari but also with her children through a series of unique experiential empowerment and other enablement programs.
Why VeerRatna
Soldiers who are killed-in-action at our borders are remembered for their bravery and honoured for their sacrifice. However, we seldom remember his family left behind in this world. They are the ones who are bereaving and yet carry the onus of his bravery to the fullest. VRF works with wives and children of such soldiers.
The war widow (called as veer naari) often hails from rural India and is thrown into the altered realities of the world albeit sans her husband and is many a times frozen into this space. While our Central and State governments provide for such a family to empower them financially and ensure specific posthumous schemes reaches them; VRF’s work augments these schemes with our carefully designed engagement models to build their true empowerment and social standing. The premise of our work is built on the multitudes of social, financial, parental and interpersonal pressures she faces and are committed to brining the rhythm of life back in her…again…
Veer Naari is so much more than a brave heart’s wife;
being a woman in her own right.
She does not deserve our pity;
but more than what we think is the necessity.
She deserves to live a full life;
bursting with colours, vibrance, sans trife.
So, she is so much more than a brave heart 's wife;
breaking barriers of her own life.
What we do?
VRF functions as a bridge for our BC families.
Our ultimate aim is to enable the families to reinvent themselves with a renewed purpose.
Since 2007, we have created ways and means to encourage building awareness and self-sufficiency in our war widows and her children. Towards this outcome;
- We ensure that the war widow is aware of her financial and legal entitlements.
- We provide assistance to liaise and forward grievances, if any, to respective agencies/authorities.
- We create safe opportunities for them to experience the world beyond their comfort zones, to forge ahead and become resourceful.
- We help her make connections with other BC families, such that they become empowered to build their own community support system.
Areas of Impact (AOIs)
All VRF’s programs are designed for enhancing specific AOIs which are key to one’s holistic wellbeing.

People
Colonel Vasanth Venugopal, AC
The foundation was set up in 2007 by Subhashini in memory of her husband Col Vasanth V AC, who was immortalized as commanding officer of 9 Maratha Light Infantry on 31st July, 2007 in OP RAKSHAK at Uri, J&K while fighting against terrorists. He is the first posthumous Ashoka Chakra (AC) recipient in Karnataka, decorated for his gallant act and supreme sacrifice to our nation. He displayed outstanding bravery, courage, and resolute leadership during his illustrious career. It was this experience and direct observations of the war widows which birthed the need of VRF.
